33.Thomas Stephens (see p.48)On Sir Thomas Phillipps' tree ("Gloucestershire
Pedigrees") Thomas is shown, as here, to have married Mary Adderley. Their 4
children are given as Edward, Ann, Susan & Mary. Thomas himself is shown as a
son of Edward Stephens & Mary Raynesford.I see no evidence that he was married
in America. Having looked on
www.familysearch.com ,the only marriage I could get for a Thomas Stephens to
a Mary Adderley was: 31 March 1692 Alderley, Gloucestershire (which sounds much
more likely-the parish is just S of Wooton under Edge, about halfway between
Horsley & Little Sodbury) [source=Batch no.7413022 Sheet 17 Source Call
no.0935416;Patron Sheets 1969-91].As the marriage is not directly from the
register it could be worth checking. I also note that an Edward was baptized 5
March 1695 at St.Nicholas Gloucester, son of a Thomas & Mary Stephens, also that
a Susanna was baptized 1 March 1697 at the same church to the same parents.
(Source familysearch.com ,originally from Parish registers).
On Sir Thomas Phillipps' tree the above Thomas is shown as brother of Edward
Stephens who m. Mary Hale (see "Stephens"p.48),& Edward is said to have been of
Alderley.
There is a will of a Thomas Stephens of Gloucester (he had a house there) which
was made in 1721,proved 29th Dec 1736(Gloucester Records Office, on film).
This Thomas had a son Edward & daughters Mary Stephens & Anne Venn. He left
money for the establishment of a charity school at Cherington. It seems possible
this could be the same person. [I have more details] Cherington parish is about
5miles SE of Stroud & the relevant branch of the Armorial Stephens family is
associated with this parish.
Some notes on the 17C Stephens who crossed the Atlantic,& their possible origins
Anthony Stephens (see p.32-34)Said to have been born "c.1624 in England,
probably in London "and "came to Lancaster Co., Virginia"...."..in Lancaster
County, Virginia,in 1659;wife not traced" (KarenMcGlynn.GED.FTW) This seems to
be on the basis of his name signed on various documents (Lancaster County record
Book 2,page 193,as quoted by Clarence Perry Stevens). No-one seems to record his
death or burial,or to say what the source is for his date of birth. Origin
unknown.
48.Catherine Stephens (see p.91) The Deane family record states that she married
Thomas Deane on Jan.5 1669,& that they settled at Taunton, Mass. Where they
married is not stated (the record sounds something similar to a family bible
entry). There is no marriage recorded at Little Sodbury ,Glos., which seems to
have been a speculative suggestion. As Thomas Deane's father, John Deane, left a
will proved 1660 & there seem to be good records for the Deane family in America
at that time (refs. quoted-see p.91)it is a little puzzling [for this
researcher] to understand why it is thought Catherine & Thomas were married in [old]England. Some
submissions (see www.familysearch.com)
say that Thomas' father John Deane was married in Chard, Somerset.
The county town of Somerset [England] is Taunton (the records office is there)
but I don't know if there's any connection.
Catherine seems to be a promising lead to follow (see also 'Stephens' p.56-7)as
she is associated with other Stephens in America said to be her brothers
,including Cyprian. Some say Cyprian's father came from London, some Devonshire
.No Gloucestershire connection is evident.
Wanted: the marriage entry for Catherine Stephens & Thomas Deane. As she was
probably born during the Cromwellian period a baptismal entry is sadly unlikely
to be found.
