p.17 &23No obvious connection between Richard 19,son of Richard Stephens &
Margaret St.Leo, and the Richard who married Aubrey & lived in Mentmore('Mealemore',
Buckinghamshire) .Need they be related at all?
Ann Kery is given as "Ann Kirby" on pedigree in 'Bristol & Glouc. Arch. Society
Vol. XXII'*
The same tree ("Pedigree of the Stephens Family Showing the Devolution of the
Manor of Horsley") states Margaret St.Leo to be daughter "of Edward Saint Loe of
Kington, Wilts., died 4th Mar.,1591" Possibly this Kington is West Kington,
about 3&1/2miles NW of Marshfield, and on the Gloucestershire border. The death
date is Margaret's. Nathaniel is the only son acknowledged on this tree."3
daughters" are mentioned but not named.
*Ann Kirby is stated to a widow & "daughter & co-heir of John Stone, London".
[Delete "daughter of (???)Kery"?]
p.22 Anthony Stephens "b.ca.1560"(or 1569?)Although evidence is stated to exist
for his coming from Wiltshire, this does not seem to be spelt out, nor is his
connection to the Eastington Stephens. There were other Anthony Stephens
baptized /born about this time (e.g. one in Broadway,Worcestershire-1557,another
in Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucestershire, another in Kent...)The "Visitations of
London,1634"is mentioned. Is this the source? Anthony does not appear on either
the 'Bristol & Glouc. Arch. Society Vol. XXII' pedigree or Sir Thomas Phillipps',
so it is important to establish who he is. I doubt he was born in 1569 & married
in 1582[aged 13?]
p.24 Children of Nathaniel 19 & Catherine Beale (d. of Robert Beale of Priors
Marston, Warwickshire) are shown on 'Bristol & Glouc. Arch. Society Vol. XXII'
pedigree. Robert's date of death is given as 1678,but on Sir Thomas Phillipps'
tree ("Gloucestershire Pedigrees") it is 1675.Without checking I cannot say
whether 1675 or 1678 is correct. His birth is given as 25th July 1622.
p.25 It's perhaps unfortunate that the "Notes for Henry Stephens" are placed
beneath an entry for a Henry Stephens of 2 generations earlier.Henry(1710-95)was
grandson of Richard(1620-78?).
p.32-3 Thomas19Stephens(b.ca.1585)[if he WAS born 1585 & his father was born
1569 then his father was only 16 at the time...]The note saying he was 2nd son
of Anthony and Katherine is interesting. Who was the 1st son? What is the
source? If he was born in London & lived in London, on what evidence was his son
Nicholas born in Gloucestershire at Little Sodbury?
One ref. in www.familysearch.com states a Thomas "Stevans" to have married Mary
Walle at Little Sodbury "abt.1615"![No source info]
p.41 As previously noted,John Stephens of Lypiatt NOT the same person as John
Stephens of Connecticut. See book by Charlotte Steevens Holmes published
1906,and Claude Willis Barlow's "John Steevens of Guilford, Connecticut" (publ.
John M. Stephens ,Rochester N.Y. 1976 -Library of Congress Catalog Card No.
75-39127)
p.47 Children of John & Mary Stephens: I could not find any of these in the
Kenilworth registers at Warwick Record Office.-they don't seem to survive
pre-1630.There was certainly no baptism of a Thomas or any other Stephens on 5
Dec.1630 in the register (this was the earliest year available). I found no
Stephens/Stevens baptisms1630-32.There was an index of 'Strangers found in the
Parish registers of St.Nicholas, Kenilworth'. No Stephens listed 1630-1800.
p.49-50 The Nicholas Stephens("b.ca.1620")who married Elizabeth Starkey is at
least shown by the parish register of Cornhill, London to have been married
there NOT in Little Sodbury as previously stated. Well done, Clarence Perry.
