Chlordane

Chlordane was used for termite treatment for many years. In 1988 it was banned in the US. If your home was built prior to 1988 it is very likely that it was used for termite treatment in your crawlspace. The problem is that it has not gone away. This product has a life span of 20 to 30 years after application.

If it is present in your home, and if you come in contact with the dirt in the crawlspace which it is contained, or the dust of rotten wood in the crawlspace when doing repairs, you could receive chemical burns.

I have been burned several times. The first time I was replacing a small bath floor. Two days later I had what was equal to second degree burns on my face, neck, arms and nasal cavity. Three other times doing floor repairs I have had my face and arms burned, the most recent was August 2001 doing repairs to a house in Hanahan. Painful? You Bet!

If your home was built prior to 1988 and you have to go into your crawlspace, take precautions! Wear long sleeves, gloves, a hood and face mask If you have to do any floor repairs or are doing any digging under your home you also need to wear a full face respirator. If this product is present and it comes in contact with your skin or if you breath it in, it will burn you.
